Nous, Noology, and the Noosphere Nous, Noology, and the Noosphere Nous, Noology, and the Noosphere By Maeve Maddox My introduction to nous to mean â€Å"common sense†came from my reading of the Inspector Morse mystery novels by Colin Dexter. Morse frequently tells his long-suffering sergeant, Robbie Lewis, to use his: Morse interrupted him. â€Å"Christ man, youre not in apron strings. Use your nous!†Nous comes from ancient Greek philosophy in which it is the word for mind. It entered English with the meanings â€Å"mind, intellect, intelligence,†and â€Å"intuitive apprehension.†British speakers use nous colloquially to mean â€Å"common sense, practical intelligence, or gumption.†Some speakers make it rhyme with house; others with noose. Also deriving from the Greek word for mind are the words noology and noosphere: noology noun: the branch of learning that deals with the mind or thinking; the study of the spiritual or distinctively human aspects of humanity. noosphere noun: the part of the biosphere occupied by thinking humanity; (with reference to the writing of P. Teilhard de Chardin) a stage or sphere of evolutionary development characterized by (the emergence or dominance of) consciousness, the mind, and interpersonal relationships, postulated as following the stage of the establishment of human life. Since the 1940s, these words have been gaining popularity in discussions of cybernetics. We swim in imagination and bring the noosphere alive with collective consciousness. Wired, 1996. This paper also introduces Noology, which is the study of the intellect and intellectual phenomena and explains how Noosphere is connected with Cyberspace.- Abstract of a paper titled Application of Cybernetics in Cyber Criminology. Some people are going beyond the interaction between the noosphere and the physical world and see a link between the Internet and the noosphere.- Waking Times, a news blog. Princeton University’s Global Consciousness Project measures changes in global human consciousness. When random number generators indicate that some great event has â€Å"[synchronized] the feelings of millions of people,†the researchers â€Å"calculate one in a trillion odds that the effect is due to chance.†According to the project’s website, â€Å"the evidence suggests an emerging noosphere or the unifying field of consciousness described by sages in all cultures.†There can be no question that human interaction with computers is affecting the way people think and behave, not necessarily in a desirable way. Computer scientist Jaron Lanier sounds a warning against the consequences of a Web culture dominated by advertising and aimed at imposing conformity in his book You Are Not a Gadget, Knopf, 2010 (paperback, 2011). The Power To Change Yourself essays We have seen insight from different writers showing that all people have the ability to create his or her own person. Environmental factors play a huge role in the creation of a person, but the mental predisposition is the primary cause for who we become. It does not matter if individuals are surrounded by constant negativity and adversity, because they still have the choice to fall into conformity or stand up for themselves. We have witnessed the different outcomes as a result of strong determination in Fredrick Douglass and weaker determination in Frankenstein. Douglass and Frankensteins monster were very different people from different times, but they both had the same chance to work with their given opportunities and choose the path their life would follow. Cause and effect are highly predominant in certain situations, but people always have the option to become who they truly want to be. Fredrick Douglasss birth was considered insignificant, except to begin his live as a slave. Douglass was birthed by an African slave woman, who had been impregnated by a Caucasian slave master (most likely), whose identity remained unknown. He was then torn from his mother in order to hinder the development of the childs affection toward its mother, and to blunt and destroy the natural affection of the mother for the child (13). Douglass was denied the emotional support found within a family and was left to raise himself. The birth of Frankensteins monster, however, was a huge event, that marked the advancement of science and technology. He was made out of the sheer passion for science, yet was quickly abandoned by his own maker. Like Douglass, the monster was also denied any emotional connections and was left to experience the new world on his own. Microtubules Definition and Examples Microtubules are fibrous, hollow rods that function primarily to help support and shape the cell. They also function as routes along which organelles can move throughout the cytoplasm. Microtubules are typically found in all eukaryotic cells and are a component of the cytoskeleton, as well as cilia and flagella. Microtubules are composed of the protein tubulin. Cell Movement Microtubules play a huge role in movement within a cell. They form the spindle fibers that manipulate and separate chromosomes during the mitosis phase of the cell cycle. Examples of microtubule fibers that assist in cell division include polar fibers and kinetochore fibers. Animal Cell Microtubules Microtubules also form cell structures called centrioles and asters. Both of these structures are found in animal cells, but not plant cells. Centrioles are composed of groupings of microtubules arranged in a 9 3 pattern. Asters are star-shaped microtubule structures that form around each pair of centrioles during cell division. Centrioles and asters help to organize the assembly of spindle fibers that move chromosomes during cell division. This ensures that each daughter cell gets the correct number of chromosomes after mitosis or meiosis. Centrioles also compose cilia and flagella, which allow for cell movement, as demonstrated in sperm cells and cells that line the lungs and female reproductive tract. Cell movement is accomplished by the dis-assembly and re-assembly of actin filaments and microtubules. Actin filaments, or microfilaments, are solid rod fibers which are a component of the cytoskeleton. Motor proteins, such as myosin, move along actin filaments and cause cytoskeleton fibers to slide alongside one another. This action between microtubules and proteins produces cell movement.

Following is a sequential comparison of both the plays. Sophocles: Oedipus the King In Oedipus the Kind, Sophocles emphasizes upon the inevitability of fate. A man cannot escape his fate notwithstanding his struggles. Even if a man sets out on a path to escape his fate, it may later be disclosed that the path was actually leading him to his fate. Same may be the theme in this play. The play represents that the lives of humans depend upon the choices they make in their lifetimes. If the choices are good, they will be rewarded with good fate; and if the choices are evil, they will be given a similar fate. However, in case of Oedipus, his fate was decided at the time of his inception (Frank, 5). He was never given an option to change his path. A prophecy was disclosed at the time of Oedipus’s conception and it was this fate that determi ned an uneven life for Oedipus with tragic consequences. The way the role of fate has been emphasized in this play is highly plausible. All the successes and failures of Oedipus’s life depended upon his underlying fate. The prophecy disclosed that he was bound to kill his own father and then marry his own mother, and his whole life led him to that one inevitable moment when he fulfills his destiny. Upon hearing the prophecy, his father attempted to get the infant Oedipus killed and he had several narrow escapes from death. His mother was supposed to kill him but due to her motherly love, she was unable to do so. The servant, instead of killing him by hand, decides to leave the infant at mountain top to die due to exposure to severe weather. After escaping death once already, Oedipus does it again when a shepherd finds him and saves him from the mountain top. This is where the actual tragedy of life decided by his fate starts to unfold. The shepherd takes Oedipus to Corinth wh ere he is taken by King Polybus. Oedipus is raised believing that King Polybus and his wife Merope are his actual parents. He remains unaware of this fact throughout his life. This is one of the ways of fate through which he is led towards his ultimate destiny of killing his own father and marrying his own mother. The way every single event of Oedipus’s life has been depicted in the play emanates his underlying fate. No matter how far he gets from his actual parents, he comes across them in the most unlikely of circumstances and fulfills his destiny without even realizing the truth. He ultimately kills his own father on his way to Thebes and takes over the throne. He marries the King’s widow who was his own mother and he bears several children. He remains satiated until the truth unfolds. He comes across the truth when he is teased by the following riddle:                        Revealed at last, bro ther and father both                        to the children he embraces, to his mother                        son and husband both- he sowed the loins                        his father sowed, he spilled his father’s blood.
